Married Mary Campbell and moved to Pittsfield in 1816

Distinguished for sound judgement and scrupulously honorable

Had a passion for education and learning

Help shape the Pittsfield School Districts

One of the founders of the present Berkshire Athenaeum. Donated $5,000

Served as the President of the Agricultural Bank

First President of the Pittsfield Cemetery in 1849. Continued his presidency until he died in 1867 at age 80.

Mary Martin Clapp, daughter of Calvin Martin, donated the Martin Memorial Chapel on October 17,1900.
